Winter fishing in Michigan, December, January, and February are a great time to swing for steelhead. Swinging is definitely an art in itself but the patterns your tying don't need to be, simple is good. I make simple leech/Sculpin patterns with some flash (using more or less depending on what river I plan on fishing), weighted eyes or weighted wire wrapped around the majority of the shank of the hook. Thats pretty much it, mainly tying black bodies with different colored heads. I do different sizes but main in the 3in range, my model for Michigan, the smaller the better IMO. I love to Spey fish but I also like the catch steelhead so get that west coast crap out of your head, down size, and smash some chrome.
